Passive/(Aggressive!) Solar Design Course - Fall 20106 CEU credits, early registration discount

Learn guiding principles of passive solar design and hands-on methods for building or re-modeling structures to gain increased energy efficiency and comfort through harnessing natural forces.

house heating history

Passive Solar Design is the creation or renovation of buildings employing techniques of orientation to natural forces, notably the sun, but also the related breezes and vegetation that are generated by it. The objectives are to align ourselves harmoniously with the movements of our planet and in so doing, to creating a temperate environment in which to live, while using as little mechanical energy (and costly fuels) as possible.

Some of these techniques have been employed for centuries and there are now new developments as well to apply to a resource-limited world. This class will explore these strategies and look for applications to employ on our own dwellings and work places.

In this class, you will learn how to:

  • Sketch scaled site plans and buildings in 3D
  • Track and draw the sun/shadow movements on buildings and site
  • Review historical examples as well as current trends in passive design
  • Visit actual examples of structures employing passive design in Rhode Island
  • Introduction to Planning, Building and Energy Codes, and working with Architects and Engineers

Who Should Attend This Class?

  • Homeowners, Realtors and anyone with an interest in sustainable design
  • Builders and related Contractors
  • Architects and Engineers

The class will be taught by Greg Spiess AIA, LEED AP, a practicing Architect in Rhode Island and a LEED AP Accredited Professional in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Rating System of the US Green Building Council.  He has taught for over twenty years at the University of Southern California and Roger Williams University Schools of Architecture and has worked on both coasts of the United States as well as overseas, in a variety of climates, often employing these techniques.
