About the Junior Solar Sprint:

Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is open to young people between the ages of 10 and 14, who design and race their own MODEL SOLAR ELECTRIC CARS with the guidance of teachers, troupe leaders, parents or other helpful grown ups. Young people develop hands on skills as engineers, craftspersons, scientists and solar power whizzes through this highly motivated learning experience. JSS teams use a standard photovoltaic solar panel, motor, rules and appropriate instruction, and they create the fastest, coolest car they can.

Junior Solar Sprint was first developed by the U.S. Department of Energy in the early 1990’s and now has over 100,000 kids participating each year. In the northeastern US, there is a network of area design and race competitions and an annual invitation-only Championship event in Springfield, MA. The Apeiron Institute has hosted the RI Junior Solar Sprint for seven consecutive years, and for the past three years has held the event as a larger community building event at The Met School in Providence. In 2011, the race will be held for the first time at the Compass School's Eco Fair in Kingston, where the race will be paired with booths, games and activities for the whole family.

Junior Solar Sprint offers educators a stimulating, experiential method of teaching subjects as diverse as physics, math and environmental science. Interested teachers, troop leaders, parents and homeschoolers have many resources at their fingertips. Attending an introductory workshop or technical assistance session is a great way to learn how to get started with your own group of kids.
